Microsoft will release an emergency security patch for Windows tonight. This is unusual, as Microsoft typically releases security patches only once per month on what has become known as “Patch Tuesday.” The rushed release may indicate that the security hole puts users at greater than usual risk.
A little more information can be found here and here. If you are a Windows user and you do not use Automatic Updates (which you probably should), or if you are a Windows sysadmin, you may want to go out of your way tomorrow morning to download and install the new patch. Home and small office users can do so via Windows Update, which can be found in the Start menu and/or in the Tools menu of Internet Explorer.

Microsoft is preparing for it’s Professional Developer Conference next week. Some attendees are likely to get a peek at a couple of Windows 7 features.

Saya akan menuliskan posting berikut pada Bahasa Indonesia, karena nampaknya di Indonesia masih “awam” tentang konsep ini. Saya harapkan, tulisan saya akan sedikit mencerahkan pembaca, mengingat teknologi informasi saat ini akan berkembang ke arah sana.
Cloud Computing…Barang apa lagi itu??
Kalau diterjemahkan secara literal sih, maknanya komputasi awan, yang ada malah bikin bingung. Nah, penjelasan yang saya ambil dari berbagai sumber, maksudnya itu kegiatan komputasi yang dijalankan sebagaian besar di server. sedangkan klien hanya “menampilkan” hasilnya saja. Komputasi disini maknanya bukan hanya menghitung loh, bisa mengolah, menyimpan dan menghapus.

Software yang dapat merubah dunia: WorldWide Telescope? February 29, 2008

Setelah mencoba melakukan prediksi pada tulisan saya sebelumnya, ternyata software penemuan yang berhasil dikembangkan oleh Microsoft adalah World Wide Telescope.
Bukan sembarang Telescope biasa, tapi telescope yang dikembangkan dikatakan mampu merekam galaxy beberapa juta tahun yang lalu ( masih ingat pelajaran IPA kan? kalau cahaya bintang saat ini yang kita lihat, sebenarnya cahaya yang diproduksi beberapa masa yang lampau. Bergantung dari jarak bumi ke bintang tersebut ).
Menurut saya, hal ini sebenarnya tidak terlalu baru juga, karena Google sudah meluncurkan inovasi sejenis, bernama Google’s Sky viewer.
Berhubung software saat tulisan ini dibuat belum tersedia, saya masih penasaran dengan engine yang digunakan untuk membuat perangkat ini, apakah Direct3D, atau Microsoft membuat akses ke telescope yang sudah ada, atau mungkin ada inovasi lain dari Microsoft.
Sekali lagi saya mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Bapak Budi Rahardjo, yang membuat saya terus memantau blog Scobleizer untuk mendapatkan informasi ini.

Microsoft researchers make me cry
It’s not often that I see software that really changes my world. It’s even rarer that I see software that I know will change the world my sons live in. I can count those times pretty easily. The first time I saw an Apple II in 1977. When Richard Cameron showed me Apple’s Hypercard. Microsoft’s Excel. Aldus’ Pagemaker. And something called Photoshop, all in his West Valley Community College classroom. Later when I saw Marc Andreessen’s Netscape running the WWW. ICQ and Netmeeting which laid the ground for Skype.
Waktu lagi jalan-jalan baca blog, ada link dari Pak Budi Raharjo(lagi?) ke postingnya Scobleizer(susah amat ngetiknya..). Tentang 2 peneliti dari Microsoft, Curtis Wong dan Jonathan Way, yang berhasil menemukan penemuan luar biasa yang dihasilkan. Kira-kira apa yah softwarenya? perubahan radikal nggak? seperti dari Windows 3.11 ke Windows 95.
Bahkan penulis tersebut mendeskripsikan bahwa software tersebut “luar biasa, yang bahkan menunjukkan bahwa sebenarnya tidak ada tekanan untuk membeli Yahoo!”, dan “malah membuat Yahoo! ingin masuk kedalam Microsoft”.
Saya coba menebak, kira-kira apa yah?
Green Technology mungkin? saya berpikiran hal ini karena Microsoft Imagine Cup tema tahun ini adalah “Membuat teknologi yang mendukung lingkungan hidup yang berkelanjutan”. Yang sudah membuat saya “buntu” menemukan ide dengan tema tersebut( sepintas memang ada ide, tapi mengerjakannya saya rasa tidak bisa dengan ilmu yang saya miliki sekarang).
Pemrograman cross-platform? tau kan.., Microsoft kesulitan karena developer-developer softwarenya hanya bisa membuat di platform IBM-PC dengan WINDOWS sebagai OS-nya. Memang sudah ada .NET, tapi berhubung saya cuma sedikit “ngerti” tentang .NET. yah bisa jadi kemungkinan juga.
Atau dibidang HCI(Human Computer Interaction), cara baru buat berinteraksi dengan komputer? seperti tinggal tunjuk monitor, atau ada helm yang dipakai buat mengendalikan komputer?
Apapun itu.. kita tunggu tanggal mainnya

REDMOND, Washington: Microsoft, the world’s biggest software maker, made an unsolicited offer Friday to buy Yahoo for about $44.6 billion.
The $31-a-share offer is 62 percent more than the closing price of Yahoo shares Thursday, according to a Microsoft statement distributed by PR Newswire. Yahoo shareholders can choose cash or stock, Microsoft said.
Microsoft and Yahoo explored ways to work together in late 2006 and early 2007, according to a letter the Microsoft chief executive, Steve Ballmer, sent to the Yahoo board. Yahoo rejected the idea of being taken over by Microsoft a year ago, the letter said.
“While a commercial partnership may have made sense at one time, Microsoft believes that the only alternative now is the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! that we are proposing,” the letter said. “This proposal represents a compelling value realization event for your sharehold ers.”
“We have great respect for Yahoo, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market,” Ballmer added.

Microsoft said it had identified four areas that would generate at least $1 billion in annual synergies for the combined entity.
The European Union’s top competition watchdog declined to comment on news of Microsoft’s $44.6 billion offer to buy Internet company Yahoo .
“We have no comment,” said Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for the EU competition commissioner, Neelie Kroes, on Friday.
Microsoft said it believed the proposed combination would receive all necessary regulatory approvals.
European Commission clearance would probably be needed for a deal of this size.

Untuk yang bahasa inggrisnya pas-pasan.., inti dari berita tersebut adalah Microsoft berencana meng-akuisisi Yahoo! inc. senilai 44 triliun USD., jumlah yang sangat-sangat besar untuk ukuran orang Indonesia(harta keluarga bakri mendekati itu atau dibawahnya saya kurang tahu). tujuan sebenarnya dari Microsoft mengakusisi Yahoo! mungkin untuk mengurangi dominasi pangsa pasar dunia pencarian di Internet, yang saat ini dikuasai-atau bahkan hampir dimonopoli oleh Google, disamping itu anak perusahaannya(Blogspot, Orkut, Gmail, dll) juga mendominasi dunia internet.
Sedangkan Microsoft masih menjadi raja di bidang produksi Softwarenya, mis. (Windows Family, Office Family, IE, MSN, MySpace dll)
